People of the Abyss

In Jack London’s People of the Abyss, the story that stood out to me the most would of have to have been the story of the lady who tried to commit suicide and failed.  When she was brought before the judge, the judge asked her why she had not done it properly the first time so they wouldn’t have to deal with her.  This story to me was amazing.  It shows how much the people living in the East End valued life.  People would be punished harder for stealing someones stuff than for murdering someone.  This is a crazy way to live, but when it is the norm no one pays any attention to it.
