Witness Credibility: George Hutchinson
George Hutchinson’s extremely detailed suspect description and history with victim, Mary Kelly, arouses debate in the authenticity of his witness credibility. It is believed that Hutchinson was the last person to see Kelly alive. She went to him for money, however, he denied her. Then, after Kelly began soliciting, Hutchinson observed Kelly’s room for 45 minutes. He reported that the man he saw her with as 5’6″, 35 years old, and a dark complexion. At first he claimed the man was Jewish, but later said he was a foreigner. He had a dark mustache, dark eyes and was clean shaven. The man had a small, 8 inch long parcel. He proceeded to describe the clothing of the man as well. Hutchinson’s stories between the press and the police differed, however. It is thought that possibly Hutchinson had feelings for Kelly and was either stalking her that night or protecting her. However, after her death, it appears that Hutchinson was simply using his information was a way to get his name in the news.
