the “Victorian Era” has two sides

Two things come to mind when I think about the “Victorian Era”: the rich side and the poor side. For some reason only London and the old South (pre-Civil War) come to mind when I think about the “Victorian Era”.
The rich side looks like the stereotypical Jane Austin crap. The big poofy dresses, banana curled hair, and perfect little white gloves. they have horse drawn carriages with servants to do all their little biddings for them.
The other image I get is that of filth, run down buildings, and crying babies on the street. The people have clothes but they are just rags. And also (of course) Jack the Ripper comes to mind (which is associated with the poorer side because that is where the murders took place). The image of darkness arises, like the sun never shines.
